Training for Legal Transcriptionists and Scopists

How long does training for legal transcriptionists and scopists take?  Which one takes the longest?  If you have heard conflicting information and want to be sure before enrolling in either program, here is our guide.

Training for legal transcriptionists and scopists is a question often asked.  The information floating around is often conflicting and confusing.  So let’s examine this subject a little closer.

Do legal transcriptionists and scopists need training?

The short answer is yes!  The question is: for how long?

First things first.

Naturally, if you spent a good portion of each day and night diligently working your way through training, you could finish much faster than someone with a full-time job.  Therefore, the length of training varies from person to person because both the legal transcription and scopist training is online and self-paced.

Just the facts, please!

  • Typical training for general transcription should not take nearly as long as for legal or medical transcription.  On average, legal transcription training takes a few weeks to a few months.
  • Training for a scopist takes a few months.  In addition to some of the same things a legal transcriptionist learns, a scopist must also learn CAT software and how to read steno notes to become a proficient scopist.

Training costs for legal transcriptionists and scopists?

The cost for transcription training varies, depending on which type of transcription is involved.  Typical costs are from inexpensive (for general transcription courses) to a few hundred dollars (for a full-blown legal transcription course).

The cost for an extensive online scoping program varies, depending on which school is chosen.  However, the typical cost for the training,  the scopist software, and reference material is around $3,500 to $4,000.

In Conclusion …

One of our good friends, Kimberly Nicholson, gave us an interview and explained how she switched from scoping to transcribing and is very happy with her decision.
