Know Yourself:  Look in the Mirror

Know Yourself: Look in the Mirror

Know yourself?  When you look in the mirror, can you see what others see?  Your skills, background, education, and everything that makes you unique?

Look in the mirror and be honest about your assets and liabilities!

Do you really know yourself and your obvious or hidden skills and talents?  Are you one of many people laid off or currently without any work or money?  Has FEAR or even PANIC set in?  Do you sometimes think how easy it would be to find a work-from-home job that pays well?

Oh, and with virtually no training required?  No startup costs.  No inventory.  Just hop online, apply, and go to work!  We all have similar thoughts.  The easy way out, right?

Not so fast!

The first question is:  How well do you really know yourself?

Truthfully, you know that you are not really qualified for certain jobs posted online on, say, Indeed, a popular site for job searches.    So those are easy to skip.  And some jobs may not pay enough to even be worth it.  Skip again.  Keep looking.

Stop.  Take a look in the mirror for a minute, shall we?

Think about these things about yourself and write down your answers.  Be realistic and honest and use it as a checklist:

Current Age  *  Health *  Education  *  Certifications  *  Talents  *  Natural Abilities  *  Hobbies  *  Life Experiences  *  Family Situation  *  Work History  *  Job Skills  *  Personal Skills  *  Background  *  Location  *  English Skills  *  Bilingual  *  Regional Influences  *  Character  *  Criminal Record  *  Current Schedule  *  Availability  *  Finances

Are each of these factors important?  The answer is yes.

Please note that gender, race, and physical appearance did not make our checklist.  Why not?  Because for so many remote jobs, none of those matter.

However, the tone and quality of your voice might be important if applying for a remote telephone job.  Additionally, multitasking or great typing skills could be important for certain positions.

I made the checklist to get to know myself.  Next steps?

Think like a company’s hiring representative.  Would you hire yourself based on your attributes or best qualities?  Would it depend on the job?  Well, yes, that’s certainly possible.

Show me some examples to help me understand.

Sure thing!  Let’s give just a few hypothetical examples if you are, say, interested in transcription work from home.

Scenario Number 1:  Raised in a Spanish-speaking home but attended American schools?  Likely, you are fluent in both Spanish and English.  Further, let’s say that you have impeccable attention to detail and a great work ethic.

If you can also type fast and accurately, a good fit could be transcription of hearings taken on the southern U.S. border.  After all, many of the speakers are not fluent in English or may use a mixture of the two languages.

Scenario Number 2:  Former 911 operator with no criminal record?  You already know the lingo for police radio calls, so you are many steps ahead of lots of others.  In addition, you just want something part-time due to taking care of an elderly parent in the home, as an example.

A good fit for you could be law enforcement transcription.  Of course, this also involves other aspects such as interrogations, prison calls, surveillance, etc., as well as 911 calls.  But you could work when you had free time from your family duties.

Scenario Number 3:  You love science and chemistry and everything related.  Currently, you have no work experience transcribing, but you want to work from home.  One of your hobbies is astronomy.

A good fit for you could be transcribing lectures of college professors in the scientific arena.  Not only would you find them interesting, but you would get paid, too.

In Conclusion …

The idea is to check the mirror and get to know yourself.  Soul search in a way.  Remember, you are unique from everyone else!  As a result, you can narrow your focus.  Select a job that meshes within the scope of who you are as a person.

Concentrate on your assets.  Why?  Your personal assets are your meal ticket.
