Transcriptionist Anita ThankGod gives her answers to our questions below, including some information about her personal situation and perspective regarding transcription.  And, yes, her real last name is ThankGod.  Anita says that she gets asked that a lot.

So let’s dive right into the interview, shall we?

How long have you been a transcriptionist?

I have been a transcriptionist for the past two years. I started in 2017 but I got really interested in 2018.

What type of transcription is your specialty? Favorite? Least favorite?

I specialize in general and medical transcription. General transcription is my favorite. Legal transcription is my least favorite because I don’t have a background in law. That makes me have to do a lot more research because I’m not familiar with legal terms.

About how many hours a week do you work as a transcriptionist?

I work about 30-40 hours a week as a transcriptionist.

Do you presently work for a company as an employee?

I’m still a freelancer for some transcription companies but I’ve not done any jobs there for months.

Or do you currently work as an independent contractor and choose your own assignments and/or clients?

At the moment, I choose my own assignments.  I mainly work from home. I also do some work from school when I’m on a tight schedule. So I do that in between classes.

Where are you located?

I’m in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria.

Can you tell us a little about your background before becoming a transcriptionist and what led you to begin transcribing as a career?

I have a bachelors’ degree in biochemistry. After I graduated, I couldn’t find the kind of jobs that I wanted so I decided to try online jobs. I heard about transcription, did a lot of research, and jumped right into it.

What do you foresee as the future for the transcription profession?

As for the future of transcription, I think it’s going to be steady and holding. I also think there’s too much competition in the field at the moment which is also going to continue. But the thing about competition is it’s always going to be there in every field. I also think the competition is great because this means that every company and business needs to be on their toes.

If you had a word of advice for someone considering transcription, what would you tell them?

The word of advice I always give to newbies is to be patient, consistent and practice. Transcription can be overwhelming at first but with time it gets easier. I vividly remember the first audio I transcribed. It was a 10-minute audio file but it took me about 6 hours to transcribe.
